Nepal is one of the most tourist friendly nations. In fact, many consider Nepal to be the Mecca of trek & tour. However, in the last few years, there has been a lot of discussions regarding travelers’ safety due to ongoing social conflicts in Nepal. In fact, some countries including the U. S., had even issued their travel advisory against visiting Nepal during the Maoist conflict. Still, despite some sporadic incidents & decline is tourism sector, thousands of tourists visited Nepal even during the Maoist insurgency. In the recent year, especially after the Maoist itself is running the government, thanks to positive coverage by the media abroad, Nepal has been witnessing a boom in the tourist arrival once again.
Moreover, even in the most ideal conditions, the WHO reports that most of the health, safety & security problems for the travelers arise not from any “exotic diseases” but from accidents & injuries. Some cases of theft & harassments have also been reported. Therefore, we suggest all travelers to accompany an authorized local guide, and ask for an advice without any hesitation.
Advice for Trekkers:
If you’re planning a difficult trek, have you subscribed an insurance that covers helicopter rescue from high altitude area?
• Better register with your embassy or consulate in Kathmandu upon arrival.
• Never trek alone – take a guide, or at least a fellow trekker.
• Register your route at the entrance to the parks/conservation areas.
• Always stick to the rules & customs of the land, as well as your itinerary.
• Trekker on high altitudes may experience altitude sickness, or Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS). Report to your guide for an advice.
